Managing Conflict--"I'm All Wet and Can't Seem to Get Dried

Like the weather, conflict can be anything from a minor squall to a turbulent storm packing hurricane force winds. Quite often conflict storms come up unexpectedly and we are not prepared with an U-M-B-R-E-L-L-A (See Dealing With Difficult People Go Ahead, Rain On My Parade). Here are some additional tips to handle unanticipated and surprising conflict tempests that are not part of typical interpersonal relationship weather patterns.

Before The Storm
Batten down the hatches to keep from drowning in stormy relationship seas. Many common expressions have nautical origins. The expression batten down the hatches is no exception. In times past, when a severe storm approached, British sailors would cover the hatches or openings in the deck of a ship with tarpaulins and secure them with battens to keep water from flooding the ship. These pieces of strong wood would fit against the raised rims of the hatchways and pin the tarpaulins down drum tight.

To batten down the hatches on stormy relationship seas:
* Take action before the storm approaches by proactively developing, nurturing and enhancing the variety of your interactions with others.
* Consider utilizing the following battens : constancy, dependability, loyalty, reliability, and trustworthiness.

Deploy Your Doppler Radar. Doppler radar is a key weather forecasting tool that can detect approaching storms before they develop into full force hurricanes, tornados or severe thunderstorms. It shows pictures of wind motions in storms which allow scientists and weather forecasters to predict a storm s arrival and intensity.

To deploy your Doppler radar:
* Be alert to early warning signals and hidden clues that a conflict storm is brewing.
* Don t ignore these signals even the minor ones.
* If you see a conflict storm brewing and you don t know where it is coming from, take time to figure out what has caused it to develop.

When the Storm Hits
Assess and Evaluate. Determine if it is a conflict squall which starts out with big gusts of wind and heavy rain, then fizzles out at a moment s notice; or is it a category five hurricane which can linger for hours or days and cause irreparable damage. Evaluate your role in the conflict.
* How have you contributed to the conflict?
* What actions have you taken in the past or what things have you left undone which have given rise to the conflict?

Seek Shelter Quickly! It can get rough out there especially if you do not see a conflict storm coming! If it is the conflict storm of the century:
* Don t react; instead control your impulses and force your mind and body to relax and be at peace.
* If you are in the midst of an in-your-face confrontation, take a break and remove yourself physically until calmer emotions prevail.
* When discussion resumes, practice actively listening to the other party and demonstrating empathy (putting yourself in his/her shoes).
* If you are unable to resolve the conflict, consider engaging a neutral third party to help you uncover the issues and develop solutions.

After The Storm
Survey the Damage. Review and inspect the conflict storm s toll and impact. Consider the following:
* Has the relationship changed in any way; is it better or worse?
* Were your issues, position, and interests addressed?
* Did you achieve a mutually acceptable resolution?

Execute Disaster Recovery & Clean-Up. To survive, thrive and emerge from the conflict stronger than ever, you must adjust your attitude.

* Restore. Find ways to restore peace and harmony in the relationship. Deal with any unresolved anger, loss or depression.
* Reconcile. Ask for forgiveness and willingly offer it.
* Rebuild. Pick up the relationship pieces and patch up any breaches that may have occurred. To minimize the reoccurrence of conflict disasters, actively seek to build a stronger relationship than you had before.

So if you don t like conflict thunderstorms or have been in one for a long time, stay warm and dry by battening down interpersonal relationship hatches, deploying your conflict Dopplar radar, seeking shelter quickly, and executing recovery efforts in the event of a conflict disaster. ***

Dissatisfied with your job? Stop Trying to Go it Alone!

Being dissatisfied with your job is a cycle, a very long and undesirable cycle. Here s how it goes:

-You start to lose interest in your job. Next thing you know you start to dread Monday s and long for Fridays. Your energy, confidence, creativity and excitement feel like they are being drained from you.

Then you start to think maybe there is a better job out there for you. You begin to envision what that job might be, but then you get scared or feel like it will be too much work to move on from where you are. Now you think things could be worse and the money is good, so you ll stay. You seem to have more energy and you start finding things you can be interested in. Your confidence, creativity and excitement start to build again.

A couple of months later you wonder why your energy and interest have dropped, Monday s are terrible, and your confidence, creativity and excitement are no more. And so begins the cycle again. You remain in this cycle because as we reviewed in previous articles:

-You believe the myths -You give away your power -You put your attention on what you don t want

And the final reason

-You try to go it alone

Why is it so important that you get help getting unslumped and moving towards work that will REALLY satisfy you? Because you have probably been in your slump cycle for years and haven t been able to get out of it on your own! I was in one for 15 years. My clients on average have been in theirs for at least 5 years. Being in a slump wears on your confidence and belief that there is work out there that will really satisfy you and that you can find it.

The crucial time to get support is the point in the cycle where you start to envision a better job and before you get scared and talk yourself out of it. Having the right support at this time can help to break your cycle!

Support comes in many different forms. Here we will look at three:

1.Friends and family We all have them, the ones that say they are in our corner but seem to talk us out of what we say we want most. These folks must be avoided during this time because you are in a place where you can easily be talked out of going in the direction you want to go. You want to seek anyone who will just say, That sounds great! You also want to seek people who are ten steps closer to where you want to be and seek their support when you need it.

2.Mentors Clients have said, I wish I just had a mentor that could guide me. Mentors are great and we can all use them, but not until we know what we need from them. It is not a mentor s job to tell us what we want and how to get it. It is our job to know what career we want so a mentor can lend us their expertise in getting it. So seek your mentor when you know what it is you want and match their skills and experience to your achieving it.

3.A Career Coach A good coach will help you get clear on the career you want and teach you the skills you will need to achieve it. They will help you to overcome your negative beliefs, teach you how to make the most use of your power to get what you really want and how to put your attention only on what you want. A good coach will teach you how to become a Career Creator , not a job seeker. They will guide you to find your right job, not just your next job.

We are all very capable of being our own worst support. Seeking the right support when you have hope that you will find your right career is critical to your moving out of your slump and towards work you know will really satisfy you. ***

Reflections in the Glass Ceiling


The recent news about one of America's most powerful woman ceo's being removed from office has raised the discussion about gender bias, again. It disappoints me that in 2005, I still hear women clients talking about "the old boys' network". They say "glass ceilings" are holding them back in terms of advancement, pay equity, recognition and career satisfaction. While I have no doubt their assessments are valid; it's important that we don't generalize too much.

There are other reasons as well. First, discretion is no longer the best part of valor. While Shakespearean wenches were prized for their discretion, professional women in today's competitive workplace are often held back by the very quality that is too often expected of women. So let me be clear on this: Women - working quietly and selflessly will not get you to that corner office! In my line of work, I still hear business professionals blaming the 'glass ceiling' for women's scarce presence in the executive suite. Research (and my own experience) shows that while the glass ceiling isn't completely cracked, it is not the main obstacle for women's advancement to the upper echelons of corporate America.

The good old boy network (active as it is) is no longer what provides men the biggest advantage in the workplace. Men's advantage comes from their willingness to speak about their accomplishments, having learned from an early age how rewarding it is to talk about winning and being first--in a ball game, in a race, in the class rankings. As boys become men and enter the workplace, they have found that in most cases it is still worthwhile and good business to push their cause--to their boss and their co-workers and their clients, too. Contrast that attitude and behavior to that of women, whose early years are marked by societal encouragement and positive reinforcement for being amenable and social and not aggressive or assertive. Today's companies are filled with many women who grew up getting positive strokes for being discreet, sociable, attractive, quiet, and not competing with boys in boys' games.

These women entered the workforce with no developed skills for self-promotion - and perhaps even a conditioned aversion to such indiscreet (and unseeming) activity. Over the 25 years I was a senior executive working in boardrooms across the US and Canada I repeatedly saw bright and talented women exhibit this conditioned aversion to applauding one's accomplishments and embracing self-promotion. That type of behavior holds women back from advancement, pay equity, recognition from the boss, and career satisfaction. And while I would like to be the only person with this opinion - I am not. There is recent research backing up this observation.

I recently reviewed an article written by William Ryberg for the Des Moines Register. Ryberg's article focused on the results of a study conducted by the Nexus Executive Women's Alliance of 1200 businesswomen in Australia in 2002. In it, women were asked for their views and opinions about the principal barriers to their own advancement and success in the workplace. While it still showed up on the results, the traditional 'boys club' was not considered their biggest impediment to upward mobility. The survey results showed that women now recognize that they are their own worst enemy. These professionals identified the barriers affecting them to be: 37.9% - a lack of self-promotion, 19.4% - having children, 18.8% - outside work commitments, 18.6% - gender discrimination, 5.4% - other women. Based on the feedback I get directly when asking similar questions to clients, I believe this study is applicable on this side of the Pacific.

Let's Consider the #1 Reason - Over many years as a senior executive in the United States and Canada, it became clear to me that women often wait to be noticed. It seems they get so caught up in the day-to-day challenges of their work that 'promoting' themselves and what they accomplish is left at the bottom of the pile. Men understand the importance of self promotion in general. And they use it better. While women often engage solely on the work at hand, and believe that a good result will speak for itself; some of their men colleagues will take advantage of whatever opportunity arises to make their case and get some 'face time' with the boss. I've seen talented and accomplished women passed over for advancement because of this lack of awareness and action. Think things aren't really like this?

Consider the following two examples and reflect on how immediately they are familiar: Situation A - Emily and Brian are two executives working in commercial real estate; each one just had a good month, closing deals worth $2 million. At the regular month-end meeting, the boss cites each of them for great results. Emily is pleased & credits her success to great teamwork. Brian accepts the praise from his boss and states his plans to close another great deal this month. What's the boss' likely impression? "Emily is a great team player - but Brian is a real go-getter." Situation B - Quarterly earnings are down 50%. The boss calls a meeting to consider new ideas to push the results ahead. Rose, who has a quiet voice, suggests almost tentatively an idea that could be a winner. The management group discusses it around the table and one of them, Josh, really supports the idea. He's assertive in his dialog and passionately defends it.

Rose's idea is adopted, but Josh gets credit for the idea. The boss even refers to it as "Josh's project." While Rose's contribution will be remembered by those who care for her, Josh leaves this meeting viewed as a great idea man. So, in summary: You cannot afford to sit back and hope someone will notice your contributions in today's environment. And secondly, develop the skill & learn to talk about your achievements in the workplace. Talk about your work to the right people. This does not mean lowering your standards. It's just recognizing the reality of the environment you've chosen. ***

5 Breakthrough Talking Tips for Women Job Searchers!

To level the job search playing field women learn to express themselves assertively in their business relationships. This is especially true when they are in the job market. 1. Speak up in business meetings. Don't wait too long to present a decisive, briefly worded opinion.
2. Stick to the big picture. Details are what make men think they ramble.
3. State your point briefly--and then stop talking. Silence gives others a chance to digest what you say, and respond intelligently.
4. Don't sit where the boss can't see you. If the room is crowded, stand up so you can be heard.
5. Assertive speech is good, aggressive is bad.

Shepard's tips are aimed at women in business meetings while on the job. But , according to EEI, her informative approach applies equally to women who are engaging a prospective employer before a job comes along. In both cases your success will not depend on what you used to do, but on how well you can communicate who you are and what you can do going forward. ***

GEOLOGISTS & Jr. GEOLOGIST

Essential Duties include:
* Complies with all Occupational Health, Safety and Environment requirements as well as those required under the Decree of the Ministry of Mines and Energy Number 555.K/26/M.PE.
* Geological mapping core logging, structural logging, core sampling, soil sampling, data collection and management, supervision of drilling rigs, geological interpretation for deposit resource modelling, survey control, field assistant supervision.
* Maintain high quality geologic data, maps and cross-sections.
* Report writing and informal presentation.
* Maintain community and government relationships

Qualifications:
* 5 years exploration, mine or resource development geological experience is essential for the Geologist position and 1-2 years geological experience is preferred but not essential for the Junior Geologists position.
* Minimum Bachelor of Science in Geology or Geological Engineering (teknik geologi/geologis)
* Knowledge of geology related to precious metal deposits (especially gold) is preferable
* Willing to work in fly camp situations in remote areas on a 4 weeks on 2 weeks off roster.
* English in both written and spoken conversation is required. Highly motivated, team oriented.
* Computer literacy is required.

This position will This position is required to manage all the necessary payments and record to be implemented to all land owners. This Position may last for 6 months only, but there will be potential position that may be considered in the future if the candidate selected has potential. This position will be based in North Sumatera.

Duties
a) Cash forecasting with the lands people on site
b) Review documentation for payments of funds and approval
c) Follow up of queries in regards to transfers
d) Accounts payable
e) General ledger reconciliations
f) Rolling cash forecasts

Qualifications
a) Qualified accountant preferably with a mining or audit background
b) Ethical
c) Prior experience with banks ( local banking would be good)
d) Ability to setup and follow control procedures
e) Cash forecasting and accounts payable skills

Lowongan

Electrofocusing, or isoelectric focusing, is a technique for separating different molecules by their electric charge differences (if they have any charge). It is most commonly used on title="Protein">proteins.

It is a type of zone electrophoresis that takes advantage of the fact that a molecule's charge changes as the pH of its surroundings changes.

Molecules are distributed over a medium that has a pH gradient (usually created by aliphatic ampholytes). An electric current is passed through the medium, creating a "positive" and "negative" end. Negatively charged particles migrate through the pH gradient toward the "positive" end while positively charged particles move toward the "negative" end. As a particle moves into a pH that neutralizes its charge, it will stop following the current. Particles of the same initial charge will deposit (or focus) around the same place on the pH gradient.

Isoelectric focusing

Isoelectric focusing, IEF, (biasa disebut juga electrofocusing) adalah sebuah metode untuk memisahkan molekul-molekul yang mana karakteristik muatan mereka berbeda.

IEF untuk protein, diterapkan suatu lowongan medan listrik terhadap campuran protein yang diletakkan dalam tempat tertentu, dimana gradien PH stabil sebelumnya telah dihasilkan. Daerah Kutub positip (anoda) terletak pada PH yang lebih rendah dibandingkan daerah kutub negatif (katoda) dan jangkauan PH dipilih sedemikian hingga protein yang akan dipisahkan memiliki titik-titik lowongan isoelectric dalam jangkauan PH ini. Protein yang terletak dalam daerah PH yang lebih rendah daripada PL-nya akan dicatu muatan positif, sehingga mereka akan bermigrasi menuju daerah kutub negatif (katoda). Selama terjadi lowongan migrasi PH akan terus turun sampai protein mencapai PH yang sama dengan PL-nya. Pada keadaan ini, tidak terdapat muatan bersih sehingga proses migrasi akan berhenti. Suatu protein [yang] yang mana [adalah] di (dalam) suatu pH daerah di bawah pI nya akan [jadi] bermuatan positif lowongan dan demikian akan berpindah tempat ke arah katode [itu]. Bagaimanapun, [seperti/ketika] [itu] berpindah tempat, sehingga pH akan ber/kurang sampai jangkauan protein [adalah] suatu pH [yang] yang mana [adalah] pI nya. Dalam posisi ini [itu] tidak punya [beban/ tugas] [netto/jaring] dan demikian migrasi berhenti. For IEF of proteins, the protein mixture is subjected to an electric field in an inert support in which a stable pH gradient has previously been generated. The anode region is at a lower pH than the cathode and the pH range is chosen such that the proteins to be separated have their isoelectric points within this range. A protein which is in a pH region below its pI will be positively charged and so will migrate towards the cathode. However, as it migrates, so the pH will decrease until the protein reaches a pH which is its pI. At this point it has no net charge and so migration ceases. Should it overshoot this point, it will enter a region of pH above its pI and so become negatively charged. It will then reverse its direction of migration and now migrate towards the anode. Therefore proteins become focused into sharp stationary bands with each protein positioned at a point in the pH gradient corresponding to its pI. The technique is capable of extremely high resolution with proteins differing by a single charge being fractionated into separate bands.

Thus one can purchase carrier ampholytes spanning either a wide pH range (e.g. pH 3 - 10) or a narrow range (e.g. pH 7 - 8). Commercial ampholytes include Ampholine, BioLyte and Pharmalyte.

PREPARATIVE IEF dapat juga dilaksanakan pada [atas] suatu sedikit banyak(nya) skala lebih kecil ( tetapi namun mampu untuk memproduksi sejumlah miligram [dari;ttg] protein murni) penggunaan tempat tidur/alas [yang] flat/kempes horisontal suatu acuan/matriks embun/manik-manik 'gel' agar-agar, seperti Sephadex, di (dalam) palung gelas/kaca didinginkan. Setelah electrophoresis 'gel' agar-agar dibagi lagi ke dalam lowongan pecahan dari yang mana protein dapat eluted dengan penyangga/bantalan.

The exact format for IEF depends on the nature of the inert support which is used. Early applications of IEF used water-cooled vertical glass columns filled with carrier ampholytes in a sucrose density gradient. The sucrose density gradient was the inert support, the density gradient helping to stabilize the liquid column against convective mixing due to heat generated during electrophoresis. The upper electrode (anode) was connected to a reservoir of acid (e.g. phosphoric acid) and the lower electrode to a reservoir containing an alkaline solution (e.g. NaOH). After a period of electrophoresis to establish the pH gradient, the protein sample was introduced into the column and electrophoresis continued until the proteins had reached their pI's. The individual protein bands were then recovered by draining the column from its base into a series of fractions. This procedure is still used for some applications of preparative IEF although it is not widespread due to the high cost of the ampholytes used. Preparative IEF can also be carried out on a somewhat smaller scale (but still capable of producing milligram amounts of pure proteins) using horizontal flat beds of a gel bead matrix, such as Sephadex, in cooled glass troughs. After electrophoresis the gel is subdivided into fractions from which the proteins can be eluted with buffer.

Despite the above preparative approaches, IEF is mainly used as an analytical technique to assess the complexity or purity of protein samples. As with SDS-PAGE, however, if the amount of protein required in pure form is only of the order of a few micrograms, even analytical scale electrofocusing may be sufficient to prepare it. Analytical IEF is carried out either in vertical polyacrylamide rod gels (especially as the first-dimensional separation of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis) or in horizontal polyacrylamide or agarose slab gels.

Horizontal slab gel IEF is now the most widely used format for electrofocusing. Thin sheets of polyacrylamide or agarose gel mounted on glass or plastic plates and containing carrier ampholytes chosen to give the correct pH range can be purchased or prepared in the laboratory. It is important to avoid molecular sieving effects so that the protein separation occurs solely on the basis of charge. Hence agarose gels would be chosen in preference to polyacrylamide gels for the separation of larger proteins because of their larger pore size. If polyacrylamide gel is used, the gel concentration is chosen so as to give a large pore gel and so minimize molecular sieving. Gel thicknesses of 1 - 2 mm can be used but increasingly ultra-thin gels only 0.1 - 0.25 mm thick are being used since these are cheaper (carrier ampholytes are expensive) and allow shorter running times (since higher voltages can be used) and improved resolution.

The horizontal gels on their glass or plastic sheets are arranged on water-cooled plates since this allows the heat generated by electrophoresis to be readily dissipated and so avoid distortion of the separating protein bands. As with vertical polyacrylamide slab gels, multiple samples can be analysed side by side. Only a few micrograms of proteins are required for analysis. A simple procedure to load the samples onto the gel is to dip a small piece of filter paper into the sample and then lay this on the gel surface at the origin. A short period of electrophoresis now allows the proteins to enter the gel, the filter paper is removed and electrophoresis is continued for several hours to allow IEF to occur. The profile of separated proteins can be visualized after electrophoresis by fixing and staining the protein bands.

However, by measuring the pH gradient across the gel after electrophoresis using a surface electrode and recording the position of the separated protein of interest, one can estimate the pI of this protein; information which could be invaluable in planning any large-scale ion-exchange chromatography step in a purification scheme.
